Do you ever have moments when you feel like something new is needed? Something that will make things easier, faster and more efficient? For me, those moments happen whenever I see a new smartphone come out. It’s that time of the year again when manufacturers tell us about the next generation of mobile technology. They want us to believe in a future where their products are the best there is on offer. I’ve been through a few of these cycles and let me tell you, they don’t get any easier. The competition gets tougher with each passing release and it seems like only by chance do we ever end up with an exceptional device. That might sound pessimistic but I can promise you, this will not be one of those times. We’re about to witness something truly innovative in the smartphone market: a whole new device from Alcatel called Volta. Let’s take a look at what makes it tick...
What is Volta?
If you’re new to all of this, let me explain. The smartphone market is constantly evolving; every few months we see a new model come out that’s supposed to be better than what we’ve got. But this never seems to work out for the best. The competition keeps getting stronger and there are fewer and fewer exceptional devices coming to market. Now, the manufacturers themselves are partly to blame for many of these issues. They release new phones on a regular basis, but seldom do they push the envelope in terms of design, features or performance. Enter Alcatel. The company has been around for a while now and has always been known to push the boundaries a bit when it comes to smartphone design. In fact, they were the first company to use curved edges on a phone. With Volta, it looks like they’re going all in. The new model features an all-new design language and comes with a host of cutting-edge features that are not available in other smartphones on the market.
Volta as we know it today
The first thing you need to know is that Volta will not be the official name of the new phone. In fact, it’s only a codename at this stage. But, to give you an idea of what this phone is about, Volta is the Latin word for “change.” As I mentioned earlier, Volta is a new design philosophy for Alcatel. Gone are the days when the company was known for bland plastic designs. Volta is all about curvaceous, metallic edges and a gorgeous glass back. The phone looks and feels incredibly premium, especially when you compare it to current models. And while the phone’s exterior looks great, its interior is even better. In fact, it’s one of the most advanced in the business right now. Under the hood, Volta has a Snapdragon 845 processor (which is currently not available in any other phone on the market). That’s right: the same processor that’s inside the Galaxy S9 and Note 9 has also made it to Volta. If that doesn’t tell you something, I don’t know what will.
The new features of Volta
Now, if you’re a bit of a tech geek, you’ll probably want to know about the new features that Volta brings to the table. Does the phone have an in-display fingerprint sensor? Will it support folding phones? How about some sort of new camera technology that will make pictures look like paintings? Sadly, none of these things are true. But that doesn’t mean you won’t be surprised by what this phone is capable of. Let’s start with the fingerprint sensor, which is something we’ve already seen inside of Huawei’s Mate 30. Here’s what we do know: the sensor is placed on the underside of the phone and is used to unlock the screen. Next, we have the in-display fingerprint sensor, which is probably the most exciting thing Volta has to offer. This is an advanced technology that makes it look like there’s a sensor pressed right against your finger. And while the sensor is similar to the one found on the Mate 30, it’s not exactly the same. That’s because the sensor found inside Volta is a different size. You see, unlike the one found on Huawei’s newest phone, this one is not placed on the outside of the screen. Instead, it’s embedded inside the OLED panel itself. This is something Huawei will be bringing to future Huawei Mate devices, but it’s a feature that’s not available in any other phone.
How much will Volta cost?
So, what is Volta really like? Let’s find out. Like many smartphones on the market, Volta will come in several different variants. But unlike most of them, Volta’s variants will not be aimed at different prices. Instead, there will be two different versions of the phone: the basic Volta and the high-end Volta X. So, basically, Volta is going to be a mainstream device that everyone can get their hands on. And while it won’t come with all of the bells and whistles found in Volta X, it will be well-equipped enough to deliver on most people’s expectations. As for pricing, the basic Volta will cost about €500 ($570), which is roughly €100 less than the hottest flagships from Samsung and Huawei.
Some final words – what to expect from this phone?
With that out of the way, let’s talk about what Volta has to offer. First of all, the design. There’s little debate that Volta looks amazing. It’s one of the most stylish phones on the market and it’ll be an instant classic. In addition to that, the phone also has some of the best specs available right now. And while the Snapdragon 845 is not available in any other phone right now, it’s still one of the best processors on the market. So, in all, Volta has some of the best hardware on the market and it’s also one of the most affordable models. That’s why I think it’s going to be a hit.
How will Volta be different from other phones?
And that’s not all. What’s going to be even more surprising than the phone’s design is how it turns out to be different from all other smartphones on the market. That’s because Volta is not only going to be the first phone to ship with this in-display fingerprint sensor, but it’ll also be the first smartphone to use Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 845 processor. That’s something we’ve never seen before; it’s a high-end processor that’s not available in any other phone right now. And while we don’t know exactly how this is going to change smartphone technology, it’s something that’s definitely going to change the market.
